About Product Design, MDes - at Sheffield Hallam University

Product design is a creative discipline that combines art and technology to improve our daily lives, protect our health and create opportunities for industry. At the end of year four, you graduate with a masters degree. You have the advantage of the undergraduate fee repayment structure where you don't start paying back your fees until you are earning above a set limit. This is currently £15,000 a year. Normally you would have to pay a postgraduate course fee when you enrol. You develop * exciting * original * attractive * usable * functional * rational * manufacturable * affordable designs. Your work will be influenced by a clear understanding of social, market, technological and materials-based trends and developments in consumer and industrial products. You learn to understand what products mean to users, and gain professional research, development and design skills. You can specialise in * business and marketing * interactive media * prototyping and design modelling. This depends on your option choices and can be reflected in your award title. It may be possible to study abroad for part of your course at design schools in * Finland * the Czech Republic * Turkey * Australia * France. You can also study a foreign language. During the course, you build a portfolio of work to start your career. We run this course parallel to our BA (Honours) Product Design. The difference comes in the third year. From then the pace of work intensifies as you finish your undergraduate studies and prepare for your postgraduate studies. In your fourth year you * work on professional projects with internationally known companies * build on your existing strengths * develop career opportunities by forging links with external partners Self-directed study forms a large part of this year, and we support you through taught modules. All students attend a selection event with a portfolio of work to demonstrate their ability. Provided you meet our minimum entry requirements, we base our offer on your application, interview and work portfolio. We normally hold interviews between January and the end of May.
