About Occupational Therapy, BSc (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
Occupational therapists are a vital part of today's health teams, helping individuals overcome the physical, psychological or social problems caused by illness, injury or disability. They work with people of all ages to enable them to meet their personal goals and achieve health, wellbeing and life satisfaction. The role of occupational therapy is varied. It can include * working with people to prevent hospitalisation * helping clients to manage the transition from hospital to home * offering community interventions to enable individuals to lead more independent and productive lives You develop the theoretical and practical skills to deal with all the challenges faced in modern occupational therapy. These include changes in health and social care needs and priorities, and the increased involvement of clients in their own care and rehabilitation. We educate you to * think critically * analyse and evaluate your practice * solve problems * use your imagination to meet the needs of patients and their carers We provide practice learning opportunities throughout the course in various hospital and community settings, allowing you to apply theory to practice. The course includes * core modules to study the theories of occupational therapy and relate them to practice * optional modules, which enable you to study in depth areas of particular interest to you * practice learning for you to gain real life experience of occupational therapy You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as nurses, radiographers and paramedics. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make. In years one and two, you learn in tutor-supported work groups with seminars, lectures and workshops. In year three, you study modules that encourage you to plan and direct your own learning with tutor support. Many modules are supported by e-learning. You also complete a dissertation and an independent study module. These prepare you for future practice when working as a qualified practitioner. As part of the course you complete a level 2 award in understanding health improvement, which provides you with a certificate from the Royal Society of Public Healthhttp://www.rsph.org.uk/.
