Course overview
This course is for students who do not have a healthcare qualification.
A midwife provides support, care and advice for the woman and child during pregnancy, labour and after the birth. This includes * preventative measures * promoting normal birth * detecting complications * accessing medical care or other suitable support * carrying out emergency measures.
A midwife also provides health counselling and education for the woman, the family and the community. This includes * antenatal education * preparation for parenthood * women's health * sexual health * reproductive health * childcare.
Practice-based learning is central to your development and you spend 50 per cent of each year on clinical placements in a hospital or community setting. Your academic study supports your learning in clinical practice.
You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as nurses, radiographers and paramedics. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make to a woman and her family during childbirth.
This course gives you the clinical midwifery knowledge and the interpersonal and critical thinking skills vital for effective maternity care.
This award includes a dissertation. You develop your specialist understanding and analytical skills by investigating an agreed topic relating to midwifery.
We provide modern facilities to help you develop clinical skills and specialist knowledge for your career. The course is based in our £13 million purpose-built Robert Winston Building on Collegiate Crescent Campus. Clinical suites in the building replicate the hospital and community settings in which you learn and work.
