Course overview

This award will appeal if you have an interest in studying crime and criminal justice plus a desire to study the foundation subjects needed for a qualifying law degree. The Solicitors Regulation Authorityhttp://www.sra.org.uk/ and Bar Councilhttp://www.barcouncil.org.uk/, the legal professional bodies, recognise this course as a qualifying law degree. Crime is a major issue in society and attracts a lot of political and media attention. If you choose to complete a criminology degree you are likely to be interested in how society and government respond to major issues such as * hate crime * domestic violence * other violent crime * property theft * other types of offending. You learn the key legal concepts and you gain an understanding of the main theories and principles connected with criminology, social policy and sociology. You also learn about important legal principles and their impact on society. You develop critical and analytical skills related to criminological theory and criminal justice specialised knowledge in an area of criminology through studying an optional module in year three research skills by completing a dissertation covering both subject areas We have a very active Mooting and Debating Society, and members take part in both internal and national competitions. In 2009 our students won the Oxford University Press (OUP)/BPP National Mooting Competition. We also have a new moot court. It is possible to move to the LLB degree at the end of year one or two, and to the BA (Honours) Criminology at the end of year one. This course may also available on a part-time basis, with criminology modules studied during the day and law modules in the daytime or evening.
