Course overview

Human geography examines * cultural * economic * environmental * political and social processes and how they interact with place, space and human activities. In your first year, you learn study skills and gain a broad introduction to human geographical topics such as * environmental issues * government, markets and sustainability * changing geography of the city. We also give you a foundation in social sciences. In your second and final years you focus on areas such as economic, political, social and urban geography geographical information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis contemporary debates in geography economic and social change in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East globalisation Subsidised fieldwork allows you to apply what you learn. Currently this includes local and regional day visits and residential field courses to Barcelona, Berlin and Prague. You can tailor your studies to your interests by choosing from a wide range of optional modules, which include learning a foreign language. You also learn IT, communication and research skills, which are invaluable for your future career. In year three, you can take an optional one year placement. This may involve working with private companies, government or voluntary organisations in the UK or Europe. The course draws on the research interests and expertise of our staff.
