Course overview
If you are interested in understanding and interpreting change in a lively intellectual framework of controversy and debate, history is for you.
History is not just about the past. It is a dialogue between the present and the past. Studying history gives you unique insights into the present day world and how it came into being. You analyse data, construct arguments and apply theoretical concepts. These skills are valuable to life and work in the modern world.
This is a modern history course, with a focus on the history of * Britain * Europe * Africa * India * Australia * the USA. You explore this from various perspectives including social, cultural, political and economic. You can also tailor your studies to your interests by choosing optional modules
You work with committed and enthusiastic staff who are active in research and writing. Much of our teaching comes from our research expertise. You develop your own research skills throughout the course. This leads to a dissertation or research essay on a topic of your choice in your final year.
The course helps you develop important skills for your future career. These include
gathering, assessing and interpreting evidence
analysing events and situations
evaluating arguments
presenting your findings in written or oral form
You work on your own or as part of a team and develop analytical thinking and awareness, which employers value.
