Course overview
The MDes combines undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single course.
You graduate with a masters degree at the end of four years’ study. This means you have the advantage of the undergraduate fee repayment structure where you don’t start paying back your fees until you are earning above a set limit. This is currently £15,000 a year. For postgraduate courses you would normally have to pay the full fee when you enrol.
On this course you can specialise in • advertising • illustration • structural graphics • typography • moving imagery, as well as traditional graphic design. This depends on your option choices and can be reflected in your award title. For example, you could graduate with an MDes in Graphic Design (Illustration).
The course emphasises the generation of new and memorable ideas, led by informed and independent design thinking. This becomes the basis of your creative process.
You work with a skilled team of tutors and design industry practitioners. Their experience and expertise give you a relevant and practical understanding of the industry.
International competition work and industry placements with leading design agencies also form an important part of your learning experience. You review and critically analyse industry practice through lectures, seminars and reports to develop your understanding of the industry.
You can take part in residential study trips at home and abroad. We complement these with visits to design conferences and professional design association events.
We give you all the support and guidance you need to help you develop your design portfolio and chosen route through the course.
The skills, knowledge and understanding you gain reflect industry needs. You leave with a design portfolio to enter and challenge the graphic design industry.
Candidates will be invited to attend a selection day event. We ask you to bring a portfolio of your work for consideration by course tutors. This also lets you meet the tutors and view our facilities.
Come and see for yourself
We welcome visitors between October and Easter. You can bring a selection of work with you and discuss how you might prepare for an interview. Please visit the Sheffield Institute of Arts open dayshttp://www.shu.ac.uk/ad/sia/
for dates and details of how to register.
About the MDes
This course runs parallel to the BA (Honours) Graphic Design. The main difference begins in year three. The pace of work increases as you complete your undergraduate studies and begin preparing for the postgraduate section.
In year four, self-directed study forms the main part of your learning. We support you in this through taught modules. You also increase your professional activity in your specialist area. This improves your skills and develops career opportunities by building on links with external partners.
