Course overview

This course provides a foundation in geographical ideas, skills, techniques and thought. You apply this knowledge to real world problems and issues. The emphasis is on relationships between the environment and human societies. You examine environmental sciences and quantitative spatial sciences including geographic information systems (GIS). You can follow a themed route in each year, for example international development studies, environmental conservation or transport studies, or you can choose to study a foreign language. We use the outside world as a resource for our teaching including urban and rural areas in the UK, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Fieldwork is important for putting your learning into context. It forms a key part of your learning, and we heavily subsidise the costs. In year three, you can take an optional one year paid work placement. Previous students have worked in organisations such as * local authorities * wildlife trusts * the Environment Agency * Transport for London. You can also choose a work-based learning module in year two. You can study abroad for a year in an overseas university in places such as Europe, Australia and Canada. We have five computer suites with IT technician support running specialist software, including the latest GIS software. We also have a resources room, which is used for printing, accessing maps and storing subject-specific material. Our map room contains paper maps, networked computers running specialist software, and an A3 scanner. You may be able to study this course part-time over six years. Please contact the admissions office for further details.
