Environmental Conservation Sheffield Hallam University

There is an increasing job market for graduates with the ability to survey, evaluate and manage sites for nature conservation. This course gives you the required knowledge and skills in these areas. It also examines how we balance the demands of recreation and development with conservation needs. You develop the analytical and professional skills as well as the personal qualities needed for a career in ecology and nature conservation areas. Our teaching staff have all worked in nature conservation or landscape management and retain strong links with the industry. Many of them sit on the committees of national and local conservation bodies including Natural England (formerly English Nature), the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and the Peak District National Park Authority. Because of these links, they can draw on practical experience and up-to-date knowledge of the topics they teach. The degree features field visits and project work at sites in and around Sheffield and the Peak District National Park. There are opportunities to take a one week residential field visit to the Czech Republic and Croatia. In year three, you can take an optional one year paid work placement. We help you find your placement with companies in the UK and overseas. Placement employers have included * Peak District National Park * British Energy * Natural England (formerly English Nature) * development agencies such as Yorkshire Forward. You may study abroad at one of our partner universities for a year, or for half of your work placement year. If you study at a partner university in the EU, Erasmus grants are usually available. There is a valuable period of work-based learning during year two, either locally or overseas, reflecting the vocational nature of the degree. This increases your industry knowledge and your employability after you graduate. Your learning involves taking part in seminars, workshops, projects and laboratory sessions in our first class facilities at City Campus.
