Course overview

This course is for people who want to study these two important humanities subjects and explore the links between them. On this course you * study modern history * analyse English literature such as novels, poetry and plays from 1500 to the present day * explore British and European cultural, social and political history * learn how literary texts reflect and comment on the period in which they were written In the first year you study literary texts from a range of historical periods and carry out several related projects. In the second and third years you can choose from a large number of English and history option modules, enabling you to tailor the course to your interests. Some modules examine the literature of a certain historic period, and other modules are more specialised and theme based. Our English and history departments have established reputations for research and a long history of collaborative working. Together we work closely on English and history research projects. Our collaboration keeps the course fresh and up to date, and supports its basic principle of combining the understanding of both disciplines. We have extensive libraries and learning support that include archives and multimedia material. These are in our modern learning centre at City Campus.
