About Gastroenterology, MSc - at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL)
The Centre for Gastroenterology is one of the largest academic departments in this country with over 50 members and a range of clinical and research interests. In the Annual Review on Postgraduate Teaching, the MSc Course in Gastroenterology received particular recognition for a curriculum which was matched to the previous experience of students and met their professional aspirations. Academic activities take place within the Centre for Gastroenterology, Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, The Wingate Institute and the Endoscopy Unit. Students on the MSc Course in Gastroenterology have their main base within the Wingate Institute. The Centre encourages the development and education of all its members, and towards this goal we hold a weekly programme of research talks delivered by invited speakers, three journal clubs (one basic science and two clinical) each week, and regular presentations of ongoing work by Centre members. In addition, a senior member of the academic staff meets with each MSc student to discuss his or her work. Opportunities to observe outpatient clinics, endoscopy sessions, clinical meetings, and ward rounds are all included in the timetable. Course content The MSc in Gastroenterology is designed both as a complete curriculum in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition for new entrants into these fields and as an update and extension for those already in it. The course provides clinicians with theoretical and clinically applied aspects of their discipline with a focus on the relevant basic sciences and research techniques. This includes a research project leading to a dissertation. It would suit both clinicians wishing to gain strong knowledge of the sciences underpinning the clinical diseases and their management, or those aiming for an academic career in this area. Teaching covers: Basic physiological principles involved in digestion, absorption, secretion and gastrointestinal motility Host defences and immunology Understanding of the presentation, diagnosis, investigation and management of all major gastrointestinal, pancreatic and liver diseases Research and diagnostic techniques used for the study of gastrointestinal diseases Principles of molecular biology Molecular genetics Statistical analysis. The programme consists of a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and practical sessions. In addition there is a research project. Assessment Assessment is continuous throughout the course based on regular work assignments in addition to two written examination papers in April. There is also a dissertation to be submitted in August with an oral examination in September.
