About Clinical Microbiology, PG Dip - at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL)

Course description The MSc in Clinical Microbiology is suitable for SpRs and scientists in Medical Microbiology in universities, NHS and HPA departments, and for others wishing to obtain a greater understanding of clinical microbiology. Many SpRs in Medical Microbiology attend the course on a day release basis to assist them in passing MRCPath. Course content The MSc and Diploma are broad-based, with extensive coverage of the following topics on a modular basis, conducted through lectures, seminars and practical work: Bacteriology and bacterial pathogenicity Virology Mycology Parasitology Bacterial structure, function and analysis Microbial disease – diagnosis, treatment and prevention Antimicrobials and chemotherapy Epidemiology and public health Hospital infection. Assessment Knowledge and skills are assessed by a series of in course assignments throughout the course. Each is designed as a learning experience in different techniques as well as a test of knowledge. There are four or five assessments each year and they form approximately 25 per cent of the end of year marks. Assessment takes the form of examinations, posters, oral presentations, case reports, essays and scientific papers. The final examinations at the end of year one include a practical exam and a written paper. The final examinations at the end of year two include two written papers, a research project or dissertation and a viva. Entry requirements Ideally you are a medical practitioner, but graduates in dentistry, veterinary medicine or science are considered provided they have suitable experience in microbiology. Students whose first language is not English must hold a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or TOEFL 610. Part-time applicants must hold an appointment or attachment in a microbiology department of a medical school or other institution in order to apply to either course. Full-time students will be attached to the Centre for Infectious Disease at Barts and The London (this is not a clinical attachment).
