Course fee notes
There are a number of sources of funding available for Masters students.
These include a significant package of competitive Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) bursaries and scholarships in a range of subject areas, as well as external sources of funding.
Course overview
This MA aims to integrate performance practice with the study of performance theory, criticism and history. Theory and practice are mutually enriching forms of intellectual and aesthetic enquiry. Performance is itself a rigorous mode of research, not merely a `topic` of research. The course combines seminar modules with practical performance options but without conceding the distinct strategies, techniques and requirements of either artistry or scholarship. Course leaders are both theatre scholars and theatre artists.
Course content
The MA encompasses seminars and studiobased practical courses that encourage you to explore performance through a variety of intellectual and aesthetic processes. You will take the following five courses:
Performance Theory and Historiography (seminar, semester 1)
Performance Research (research methods seminar, semester 1)
Group Practical Project (semester 1)
Contemporary Performance (seminar, semester 2)
Independent Practical Project (semester 2).
Upon completion of the coursework, you will prepare a dissertation that includes an element of practice-based research. You will then present your research at the Performance Research Colloquium, held annually in May.
Assessment
You will complete a 4,000-word essay for each module and a final performance for each practical module. The 12,000-15,000-word dissertation will incorporate the results of practice-based research (for example acting, directing, design, playwriting, or dramaturgy).
Entry requirements
First or upper-second class honours degree, or the equivalent, in Drama, English, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, or a related field. Professional theatre experience is desirable, though not required. Applicants with relevant experience who do not meet the academic criteria and can demonstrate the ability to work at Masters level will be considered on a caseby- case basis. Mature and non-traditional applicants are especially encouraged.
