Overview of the university

Established in 1863, Politecnico di Milano is one the most outstanding technical universities in Europe and the largest Italian university in Engineering, Architecture and Design, with more than 47,500 students.

The 2026 QS University Rankings place Politecnico di Milano at position 98 making it the top ranked institution in Italy, among the best 10 technical universities in Europe and within the top 50 technical universities worldwide.

Scientific research plays a central role in the university mission thanks to strong links to corporate research, to the availability of considerable European funds and of several well-equipped laboratories, which also ensures advanced and high-quality teaching.

The list of Politecnico di Milano notable alumni include renown professionals and scientists, such as Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi, both Pritzker Price winners, and Giulio Natta, Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Politecnico di Milano is a member of IDEA League, a strategic alliance among five leading European universities of technology.

The university has got two main campuses located in Milan and other seats in nearby towns (Lecco, Piacenza, Mantova, Cremona), chosen for their particular heritage or location.  

Milan is the heart of the Italian economy and finance; it is the city of innovation, design, fashion and of scientific and technological research. The university is very international but at the same time still deeply rooted in the Italian culture.

Timothy, MSc in Integrated Product Design

Timothy is from Philadelphia and he is a Design graduate at Politecnico di Milano.

Thanks to the university's well-equipped laboratories, he was able to develop his own creative ideas. He also had the opportunity to take part in Alta Scuola Politecnica and to work with other students in multidisciplinary teams on real-life projects.

Sebastian, MSc in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering

Sebastian, from Bogotá, chose Politecnico di Milano for its high-quality teaching and fell in love with Milan's multicultural atmosphere.

While in Italy, he grew fond of running and participated in the Polimi Run, a competition which takes place twice a year.

After graduating in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering, he went on to work for an Environmental Engineering company in Milan.

Rogerio and Yiwei

Rogerio, from Brazil, and Yiwei, from China, met each other thanks to Politecnico di Milano Buddy project.

The Buddy project matches new international students with current students of the university according to the programme and the interests of the two.

A Buddy is a current student who, on a voluntary basis, will help one international student by getting in contact before arrival, answering questions, giving useful tips, introducing student life at the university and in the city for the first three months after arrival.

International students can apply for a place in one of our students residences, located near all our campuses.

Thanks to agreements signed by Politecnico di Milano, students may also find accommodation in private residences and colleges at special conditions.

Study abroad information

Politecnico di Milano offers its students the opportunity to participate in high quality international projects based on EU programmes and on special agreements with many partner universities. Every year, more than 1,200 students from Politecnico di Milano take part in international mobility programmes and we have the pleasure of welcoming about the same number of students from our partner institutes. The students selected for a specific programme have the opportunity to enrich their academic experience by spending a period at a partner university, thereby acquiring credits fully recognised by Politecnico di Milano.

There are various opportunities, such as a period of study as part of Erasmus mobility, non-EU bilateral agreements or special programmes; a work placement in companies or university labs; a period abroad to prepare a thesis; double degrees.
