MPH students can gain a broad range of public health competencies and develop high level research skills so as to progress in public health settings.

This Masters in Public Health (MPH) is for those who wish to pursue a career in public health in the UK and internationally with:

• the UK National Health Service (or its equivalent abroad)
• local government
• the voluntary sector
• academic healthcare

A public health doctor must consider issues at many levels, including:

• societal (eg health inequalities)
• demographic (ageing and long term conditions)
• cultural (eg changing public attitudes to health and wellness)
• social (eg drug and alcohol abuse)

On the MPH in Public Health, you will address these issues and others, with a range of advanced research skills, analyses, and interventions. You will study how to apply research findings to improve health and health services

The MPH provides a broad-ranging preparation for the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health. Our teaching has been mapped against the Faculty’s competencies for public health practitioners to ensure that we continue to provide an excellent academic training.

The Institute is committed to undertake research and teaching to:

• improve population health locally, nationally, and internationally

What you'll learn

Challenges in public health that may be covered include:

• tackling and challenging health inequalities and other social determinants of health
• the role of behavioural interventions in public health
• public and patient engagement and involvement, and shared decision making
• health systems and healthcare policy

Your development

You can follow your interests and develop specialisms through the public health research project, which is developed in collaboration with our expert staff. You can choose from a wide range of projects put forward by our academics, or propose your own.

Projects vary and can involve:

• primary data collection (quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods)
• secondary analysis of a wide range of available datasets
• systematic review

You receive a thorough grounding in introductory and advanced research methods and are provided with regular research supervision throughout the course.

Placements

You are encouraged to complete work experience placements, which the university's careers service can help arrange. This experience helps to increase your transferable skills and enhance your CV.

Delivery

The course consists of taught modules and a supervised project and dissertation. Your project and dissertation are an extremely valuable opportunity for you to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills learnt in the taught component of the course.

Teaching is via a mix of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. We encourage active learning through discussion, problem-solving and group work. Some teaching sessions may involve student presentations, and preparation or further reading. Individual study is required for other sessions. Module delivery varies from semester length to intensive block teaching.

You will be based in the Baddiley-Clark Building, adjacent to the main Faculty of Medical Sciences site.

• 'breakout' areas for informal discussion
