About Applied Linguistics Research, MA - at Newcastle University
This MA will prepare you for an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded PhD in applied linguistics.

This course provides research training and interdisciplinary insight into the study of applied linguistics. The course follows ESRC postgraduate training guidelines.
Through the course you will:
- achieve a critical conceptual understanding of practice, thought, evidence and theory
- gain skills, knowledge and understanding to engage with and evaluate research and theory
- undertake advanced applied research, contributing to the development of new techniques, ideas or approaches
- make informed judgements on complex issues in specialist fields, often in the absence of complete data
- communicate your ideas and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences
You will consolidate your learning through a research project. This might include:
- a portfolio of critical literature reviews
- case reports
- pilot experiments
- draft journal articles
- a dissertation
The course is for those accepted onto a 1+3 ESRC funded PhD programme. The course is only available to EU citizens.
