About Applied Educational Psychology Doctor of, DAppEdPsy - at Newcastle University

This doctorate will enable you to become a registered educational psychologist in the UK. It is accredited by the BPS and approved by the HCPC.

Educational psychology is about the study and understanding of people's behaviour and the inter-relationship this has with organisational structures within educational and community settings.

The course will suit those with some understanding of educational systems and settings. You will learn how to support the social and educational development of children and young people aged 0-25 years. You will also learn how to work with other professionals, such as teachers.

Course aims

Our aims are to:

• promote the fullest possible inclusive education and social inclusion
• mitigate the effects of impairment, social and economic deprivation and disadvantage

During the first year there is an emphasis on the development of professional criticality and self-reflection and the acquisition of process skills including the use of:

• supervision
• consultation
• solution-oriented practices
• narrative practices
• dynamic assessment

You undertake placements in educational and community settings and study four taught modules which cover:

• key issues of inclusion and diversity
• working in partnership
• learning and social environments
• frameworks for practice

During your training you also undertake research projects. These include:

• a systematic review of published research in a relevant field
• an empirical study presented as a paper for an appropriate peer reviewed journal

You maintain a practice portfolio that chronicles and evidences your professional development during each year of the course. A model of enquiry-based learning is used throughout and you are encouraged to work collaboratively and to take responsibility for individual and group learning.

Placements:

Throughout each of the three years you undertake supervised and assessed placements in schools, educational psychology services and the settings of other agencies and professionals who work with children and young people.

Facilities:

While studying in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences you'll have access to facilities and a growing collection of online resources, including:

• a well-stocked Education Resource Centre
• an audio-video lab
• a recording studio.

How to Apply:

All applications for 2018 entry onto the three-year doctorate training programme MUST be made via the Association of Educational Psychologists online application system. The application system opened on Monday 18 September 2017.

The application deadline is 6 December 2017.

We will be shortlisting for interview in January 2018 and conducting interviews in February and March 2018..

Our 10 funded places will be offered in April 2018.

The course starts in September.
