Course overview

We provide a PGCE that combines master's level academic study with rigorous school-based training. We work with a range of high quality local schools to deliver our collaborative course of training and development. Completion of the course allows the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The School Direct initiative is designed to give you the chance to learn 'on the job' in a school. You work as part of the teaching team from day one – similar to student medics in hospitals – learning from experienced, practising colleagues and immediately putting your new skills into practice.

As with the standard PGCE, you spend two thirds of your time in schools, undertaking two teaching placements. With the School Direct route your lead school arranges your placements. Placements are usually in schools within their alliance. You can find out more about placements during the application and interview process.

Newcastle University works with the following schools on a collaborative course of training and development:

  • Cardinal Hume Catholic School
  • Emmanuel College
  • George Stephenson High School
  • St Thomas More Catholic School
  • The Three Rivers Teaching School Alliance
  • Whitley Bay High School

On successful completion of the school-based practice and academic modules the programme allows the:

  • recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status
  • award of 60 master's level credits

The PGCE is one third of the MEd in Practitioner Enquiry. Trainees can choose to carry these marks forward to the full master's course at a later stage.

Further details about the range of subjects offered can be found on individual school websites. Contact the schools directly for further details and how to apply.
