Course overview

*Sociology will be available as a BA Single Honours degree in 2017, UCAS code L300.

Sociology is the study of society; it examines the ways in which society influences the attitudes and behaviour of individuals and the impact which this has on social relationships both within societies and between societies. Accordingly, sociology is now commonly regarded as an essential discipline for understanding the development of all modern societies. This is evident, for example, in the enormous influence exerted by sociological ideas and sociological research within governments, in the media, in the world of work and in community relations. The modern world is seen as complex and rapidly changing and sociology aims to provide the knowledge and intellectual ability to make sense of it. Our sociology degree is based around a core which provides inputs from social theory and from the comparison of different forms of society. It also examines and evaluates the methods of research which make the study of society possible. The degree also enables students to study a range of additional courses which cover the whole spectrum of sociological inquiry. In the third year students are encouraged to develop their knowledge in an original piece of supervised research that enables them to apply their studies in a topic area of their choosing. 91% of students were satisfied overall with Sociology at Liverpool Hope University (National Student Survey 2015), and ranked 12th in the UK for the department's research outputs at 3*/4* with 73.7% of the Unit's research outputs rated as internationally excellent or world leading.
