Course overview
The examination for the degree of PhD in Philosophy consists of a public dissertation defense during which the doctoral student presents his or her research results. In addition, the student must propose three theses on philosophical topics, not related to the subject of the dissertation, for possible defense.
Entry requirements
To be able to apply to the doctoral programme a candidate must already have been awarded the degree of Research Master of Philosophy by KU Leuven. The candidate must have obtained this degree with an overall percentage of at least 75%. The Research Master of Philosophy programme is a two-year research master (120 ECTS) that focuses on the development of high-level independent research. The programme allows students to concentrate on a particular field of study and is supplemented by courses, seminars, and an oral defense of the research-based thesis. Students who've already earned a master's degree in philosophy with excellent results can apply for the Research Master's one-year track (60 ECTS).
