About Computer Science, BSc (Hons) - at Keele University

Informed by the latest research and industry trends, our accredited Computer Science BSc will teach you how to apply the latest computing techniques and problem-solving skills to a wide range of real-world problems. With opportunities to spend time in industry and employability focused modules, you'll graduate with the problem solving, computational thinking and modelling skills that are in high demand across various sectors. Course overview Computer systems are now vital to business, government, science and society, and there is pressing need for graduates with the professional understanding, practical skills, and theoretical foundations to harness software and hardware technologies to solve real-world problems and develop the systems of the future. From the start of your journey with us, you will gain a robust grounding in computational problem-solving skills, programming and fundamental mathematics, to equip you with the skills required for further study.

Building on these foundational topics, you will explore current and emerging areas in the field, including data science, artificial intelligence and software engineering. You can also explore new topics or deep dive into areas you are passionate about by studying optional modules. Throughout the programme, you'll engage with real-world scenarios to enhance your learning. From year two you can choose to spend time in industry with full time or modular placement opportunities.

You can also develop invaluable professional and employability skills and even pursue a personal interest in computer science by proposing a project that showcases your knowledge and skills. You will benefit from a variety of teaching and learning activities informed by and involving our partners from industry. This includes a series of guest lectures from organisations such as Microsoft, the BBC, and CapGemini, as well as grouped and individual projects involving real-world data from industry. In your final year you will unleash your creativity and undertake a substantial piece of research, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem.

Your project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management. You will also have the broadest choice in personalising your studies with our wide variety of optional modules. Specialised pathways Our programme is highly flexible as you can tailor the degree to suit your individual preferences. Our specialised pathways enable you to focus in the areas of artificial intelligence, cyber security, digital forensics, games and software engineering.

By choosing a bracketed degree, you will gain recognition of your specialism in the title of your final award. As we recognise that your aspirations and interests in the field of Computer Science may develop as you are exposed to the diverse themes throughout the programme, you can transfer between our programmes before year two of your studies, to give you the time and space to find your passion (so long as any compulsory modules of the new programme have been taken). Accredited by the British Computer Society - The Chartered Institute for IT Study topics you love by choosing from a wide variety of optional modules including artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security, digital forensics, games and software engineering From developing a design for a software item to analysing real data sets, our programme is enriched with opportunities to apply your learning to real world scenarios Be career ready by gaining transferrable, professional and employability skills Enhance your employability by learning to programme in Python and Java For more details, please see the course page on the Keele website.
