Course overview

Japan- once a self-isolated island nation cut off from the rest of the world, has been fascinating andintriguing people across the globe for centuries. Japan has risen to become one of the world’s biggest sources of economic activity and technological advancement. It is more open to the world than ever before in this age of information sharing. Yet the fascination with and interest in Japan is only growing. It is still a land of thrilling and sometimes perplexing experiences that give rise to many questions. Questions that the Japan Studies major at iCLA endeavors to answer.

In this major, you will be encouraged to unravel and understand the fundamental elements that constitutes Japan and develop a sound comprehension of how Japan became the country as it is today and its global position in future. Through Japanese language courses and cultural workshops, it will prepare you to explore what Japan is all about.

Japanology is an interdisciplinary field studying the intricate relationships between Japanese culture, history, economy, society and politics. In our Japan Studies major you will explore these areas in the context of historical and current events in East-Asia and the West. This approach connects your study and research to other disciplines, as well as to other nations, civilizations and geographic areas.

iCLA’s location, with its easy access to Tokyo and proximity to Mt. Fuji, the spiritual heart of Japan, make it an ideal place to study Japan Studies.
