About Documentary Photography, Cert HE - at Catalyst - Institute for Creative Arts and Technology
Our Documentary Photography BA is a hands-on, socially engaged degree designed for aspiring visual storytellers who want to make an impact. Rooted in practice-based learning and critical reflection, the programme equips you with the technical, creative and ethical skills to work confidently in contemporary photography.
Whether exploring street photography, long-form documentary or multimedia installations, you’ll investigate how photography can foster dialogue, challenge injustice and amplify voices often left unheard. At the same time, you’ll develop your artistic identity and build a professional toolkit for life after graduation.
From day one, you’ll work on real-world assignments using Berlin as your canvas. You’ll learn how to develop, pitch, shoot and present visual narratives that matter – supported by working professionals and a vibrant creative community.
You can study this programme either as a full three-year BA degree or the first year only as a one-year HE Certificate.
Spotlight on practice: Berlin as your canvas
Studying in Berlin means stepping into one of Europe’s most dynamic and diverse visual landscapes. From the city’s layered history to its contemporary subcultures, from activist movements to underground arts scenes – Berlin offers constant inspiration and challenge for the documentary photographer.
As part of your studies, you’ll spend time working in the field, developing your voice through real-world assignments, street-based projects and location-specific research. You’ll engage directly with communities, spaces and narratives that reflect the complexity of the urban experience.
Berlin’s openness to creative experimentation makes it the ideal place to take risks, test new formats and grow your perspective as both an artist and a cultural participant. Your camera becomes a tool for connection, investigation and transformation – with the city itself as both subject and collaborator.
