Course overview
Why study BSc (Hons) Midwifery at BU?
- You can opt to study at either of our campuses – Bournemouth or Portsmouth.
- With a strong emphasis on women-centred care, the course offers an equal balance of theory and practice.
- 50% of the course will be spent in practice placements, in community, birth centre and hospital settings, where you’ll learn from your interactions with women, families, midwives and other health professionals.
- You’ll be introduced to new equipment and skills in our simulation facilities, including a birthing suite, where you can familiarise yourself with techniques prior to going into practice.
- Learn from experienced and knowledgeable registered midwives and other healthcare practitioners.
- 95% of our nursing graduates are either employed or in further study within 15 months of graduating (source DiscoverUni 2023)

Entry requirements
For September 2026 entry: 128 - 144 tariff points (A-level grads ABB-AAA) to include a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent including 32 points in a required subject. BTEC Extended Diploma of DDM in a required subject. T-Levels: Merit (120 UCAS tariff points)
Required subjects for September 2026:
- A Level: Applied Human Biology, Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Health & Social Care, Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, Sociology
- BTEC: Applied Human Biology, Health & Social Care: Health Sudies Pathway, Sport, Sport & Exercise Science or Applied Science
- T-Levels: (Merit) Health or Healthcare Science
International entry requirements:
For September 2026 entry: If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 6.5 in all other components or equivalent.

- China: Chinese Senior High School Graduation Certificate (Huikao) average 80%, or Gaokao 76-80%. Grade depends on course
- France: Baccalaureate with 13–13.5 overall or 12-12.5 (international option)
- Hong Kong: HKDSE Diploma (4,4,4 – 4,4,5 from three subjects). Grade depends on course
- India: All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Standard XII) 75-80%
- Spain: Titulo de Bachillerato with a score of 7.5 to 8. Grade depends on the course
- Turkey: Devlet Lise Diplomasi/Lise Bitirme Diplomasi 4.0/5.0 or 80%
